The General Officer Commanding London District, Major General W G Cubitt CBE today led the Topping Out Ceremony at Chiswick War Memorial Homes, Burlington Lane.
The ceremony marked the successful completion of the external structure of 18 new homes in the first phase of re-development by the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation, working in partnership with Shepherds Bush Housing Association and Sandwood Design and Build Ltd. The homes will provide supported housing for vulnerable and disabled Veterans, including those from a homeless background. General Cubitt demonstrated the scheme's "sustainability" by fixing the buildings' final solar panel in a small ceremony attended by councilors, funders and residents from the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation.
The full completion of re-development works at Chiswick War Memorial Homes is due for completion in June 2010. The Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation is developing the existing site over two phases to provide a total of 36 homes specifically designed not only for younger Veterans from a homeless background but also physically disabled and elderly Veterans. The scheme will include a community 'hub' that will be the focus of the Foundation's community strategy, providing learning, training and well-being facilities that will improve health, help build individual confidence, facilitate social inclusion for Veterans who traditionally have been excluded, and develop initiatives that will help open up employment opportunities for Veterans.
Rick Brunwin, CEO, Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation says: "We will use these magnificent new homes to house many of the vulnerable and disabled Veterans who are on our waiting list and we will provide them with a quality of support that will help transform their lives for the better."
Paul Doe, Chief Executive of Shepherds Bush Housing Group, said: "We provide homes and support for many vulnerable people and understand these are among the most important factors in their lives. We feel privileged to work in partnership with the Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation on new homes for the Chiswick War Memorial Homes."
