The Development Plan
In recent years the Foundation has championed the specific problem of former homeless ex-Service personnel. This focus led the Foundation to assess the demand for accommodation from our client group, which in 2002 measured three times greater than the availability. Following this research a strategy was adopted by the Foundation to provide new housing developments for our clients, combining on-site training, rehabilitation and support, particularly aimed at sustaining the community and helping Veterans back into employment.
The Foundation currently has over 200 applications for accommodation
per annum, many of which are from homeless Veterans.
The Foundation is
successful in breaking the common cycle of homelessness; no one who has
come to us from a background of homelessness has returned to the
streets, but we cannot currently meet the demand for housing. Therefore, the Foundation is now halfway through its four-phase commitment of expanding its secure and supported housing community for vulnerable and disabled ex-Service personnel in London. Phase one, known as Maison Rouge, has been fully incorporated within the original Stoll Mansions community in Fulham, and phase two, known as Banstead Court, provides homes for 20 ex-Service personnel in East Acton. Both new development have established within them a strong sense of community, giving stability and a sense of belonging to previously excluded ex-Servicemen and women and thus enabling them to rebuild their lives through learning, training and back-to-work initiatives.
The success of phases one and two of the development plan has led the Foundation to begin work on phase three. The site for this phase of development is Chiswick War Memorial Homes.
